Windows XP tweaks part 2

Step 6: One way to really speed up a system is to disable unnecessary “services”, or programs that run in the background. Windows XP enables quite a few by default. To begin, open the “Start” menu and click the “Control Panel” item.

If your Control Panel has only a few options, you need to switch to “Classic View” by clicking the line “Switch to Classic View” towards the top-left of the screen.

Step 7: As you can see, there are now a lot more options. We need “Administrative Tools”, so double-click that icon.

Now, start the “Services” program by double-clicking it’s icon.

Step 8: Now, find the “Distributed Link Tracking Client” line, right-click it, and choose “Properties” from the pop-up menu. This service is used for fileservers, so most home users don’t require it.

Change the “Startup type:” to disabled to stop this service from loading, and press “OK” to apply the change.

Step 9: Repeat “Step 8” with the following services: “Error Reporting” – stops an annoying message from appearing every time a program crashes. “TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper” – another service that is usually only used in networks, so most home users won’t miss it. “ClipBook” – a service for sharing your “clipboard” across the network. “Application Management” – again, if you’re not on a network, you don’t need this.

When you’ve disabled all of these services, you can close the “Services” program and the “Administrative Tools”. You’ve now successfully tweaked your system!
