Windows-only printers are cheap versions of the printers. The entire print processing is done by the operating system and the raster image of the page is sent to the printer.

The only job of the printer is to put the toner on the paper.

The raster data is sent to the printer normally as several horizontal bands. This is mainly because of the memory constraints of the printer, which make it difficult to handle large image data at any one given time. Since the printers are cheap, they normally come with minimal memory. Also, the printers are normally not meant for large offices. The printers are also slow on speed. The vendor mentions the type of printer along with the specifications. Each vendor uses its own terminology; HP calls it a Host Based raster printer, while Konica-Minolta calls it windows-only.
