Read our Scumware guide to get rid of unwanted advertising

Scumware guide

A known issue and very large topic on the Internet today is scumware.

In this article I am going to explain what scumware is, the different types of scumware, and how to eliminate scumware and keep your details private!

Let’s define the different types of scumware so you know what it’s all about. There is different parts to our scumware guide so be sure to read all of the article.

  • Spyware

  • This little piece of malicious code watches what you do while on your computer. Without your permission or knowledge, companies can watch what you do on a site and even see the data you type in to forms. They do this for marketing information and in my opinion, the Internet is about the people not the companies. There is a debate as to whether these programs can see you enter data in secure forms. I would say they could, so get rid of this as soon as you can.

  • Adware

  • This plagues you with unwanted advertising known as popups or banners. If you have enough adware installed, the banners and popups can be so bad that you simply wont use the computer anymore.

  • Scumware

  • Scumware implements advertising on people’s web sites without the owner’s permission. They can add links, banners and even steal commissions from endorsed links you recommend. For any web site owner, scumware is a disgrace. Help the Internet community by getting rid of this as soon as you can. Information sites can stay alive and give everyone the information they desire.

  • Trash applications

  • These will install themselves on your computer and can be very hard to eliminate, normally not offering you an uninstall option.

  • Diallers

  • Diallers install on to your computer and pester you to connect to some thing you do not want to. If you do connect you can expect to be charged and often heavily.

All of the above parasites degrade your computer performance and slow it down immensely. If your computer has been slowing down lately, any of the above could be why.

My advice is to get rid of search bars, they are often installing unwanted scripts on to your computer.

The Goggle toolbar is the only search bar I would use.

You don’t need to pay to remove the above parasites. If you go to downloads.com and type in ad a ware. You will be given a link to a free download of ad- aware6. Download this and install it. Run this software and it will find, recognise and delete all your scumware issues.

Now what do you need to do?

You need to have virus protection and a firewall on at all times when using the Internet. It wouldn’t hurt to run ad aware every week or so to make sure you are clean from scumware.

To find about firewalls and virus information please view our firewall pageThis is the second part to our scumware guide.
