Printer networking environment explained

What do you mean by a networking environment for LaserJet’s?

The printer can be placed in the network and assigned an IP address. The user can print to the printer from his/her computer by making a tcp/ip port whose IP points to the printer.

Another way of using the networked printer is for the LAN administrator to connect the printer to a Print server, configure the printer with appropriate settings and then ask the user of the printer to connect to the shared printer from his computer.

This mechanism avoids the need to configure the printer locally on the user machine as the settings get propagated to the machine which is connecting to the shared printer.

The administrator can also install drivers for several operating systems on the Print server. This is useful if a windows 98 machine connects to the Windows 2000 print server, the relevant windows 98 driver files get downloaded and installed on the machine which makes the connection.

The installation of the printer on the print server is similar to how a printer would locally be installed. The printer is shared after installation to allow users to browse to the shared printer and make the connection.
