Guide to postscripts

Postscript language has been evolving for the past 20 years form postscript level 1, to Level 2, and level 3 as of now. There are a couple of key factors that distinguish one level from the other. Postscript Level 1 couldn’t handle print errors reliably.

LimitCheck and VMerror postscript errors which used to popup completely halted the printer.

DictLevel errors happen on the Level 1 printers but not on level2 printers. Level 2 printers are reliable and efficient because adobe improved the memory management and optimized the code.

Support for composite fonts, which was important for Asian countries because of bigger characters sets, exists with level 2 printers. Postscript level 2 printers support color printing but the level 1 could just print grayscale images. The color image is indicated by the color image operator in the print stream.

The easiest way to test if the printer supports level 1, is to send in a level 2 postscript data containing a color image, and it should complain with invalid operator (caused by the color image operator).
