LaserJet questions - Postscript modes

Postscript modes

Can you explain what postscript modes, pcl5e, pcl6, mean as an example on LaserJet printers?

Postscript, pcl5e and pcl6 are languages which the printers can understand.

They are also called printer description languages.

Postscript was pioneered by adobe, and pcl5e, pcl6, by Hewlett Packard.

Postscript has been used widely in UNIX environments for printing. With Ghost script as a freeware, postscript has remained the choice for printing on unix and linux variants. Postscript has the ability of specifying transparency, which the pcl languages can't.

Pcl5e is a relatively complex stream with each printer command prefixed by escape. Pcl6 is a neater version. In spite of the simplicity of pcl6, the popularity of pcl5e has deterred pcl6 from emerging as the next printing language standard.
