Most of us are using a Modem but we don’t know how this word came into being?

What is the actual meaning of this word?

Here I am going to explain the actual meaning of the word Modem. Modem is the combination of two words Modulator and Demodulator!

They took MOD from the first three characters of Modulator and DEM from the first three characters of the word Demodulator.

Why modulator and Demodulator?

Actually this device works as both input and output device. Input in the sense it converts the analog current to digital. When the data is flowing from the phone line to the computer through a modem. The output works in the sense it converts the current from digital to analog while data is flowing from the computer to the phone line.

Both of the above processes takes place at the same time as we receive and send bytes at the same time while we are connected through this device.

Modem is available in two shapes, one is the external modem, which is almost equal to the size of a floppy drive and some are equal to the size of CD a ROM, while the other is internal modem which is around the same size of what RAM is.

Today most of the motherboards come along with built-in internal Modem, if not then there will be a slot available for an internal modem to install.
