Mobile Printer Reviews

In selecting a mobile printer, I look for several key factors, but not necessarily in this order:

  • Size and Weight
  • Speed
  • Image Quality
  • Appearance
  • Portability
  • Over the years, the desire has increased for mobile users to be able to print good quality images and text in the field. Whether you’re working on a proposal at the airport or printing a contract at the clients, it’s increasingly more important to be able to get the information on paper right away.

    Who needs one?

Anyone who is out of the office a third of their time would definitely benefit from a portable printer. Salesmen, field support personnel, Insurance agents, Real Estate agents, the list goes on and on. Having a laptop onsite and being able to punch in number, or show design changes immediately is great, but being able to print that contract, or a nice photo of a completed job, makes things even better.

    Size Does Matter

Most printers in this category are around 3-4 lbs. and approximately 12” x 7” x 4”. Some are even smaller. Check if the listed weight includes the battery, which can be a huge chunk of the printers heft.

    How to connect

Several interface options are the best. USB and infrared are a must. An old fashioned parallel port isn’t a bad idea either, and if Bluetooth® is available, you might want to look into it, especially if you have a handheld computer. If you have a digital camera, you might want to look for a printer that will enable you to print without having to hookup your laptop.

    Last, but not least

Also note the listed page-per-minute speeds. Some manufacturers list things like Up to 9 ppm. That speed is usually in draft mode, and you probably won’t use that very often. You want to get the printers normal operation mode, which is better quality. For B & W 5 is acceptable, and for color 2 ppm is not unreasonable.
