The LaserJet printer rules over the inkjet printer when it comes to cost effective large volume printing and long term maintenance costs.

Normally an inkjet cartridge can print pages in the order of hundreds, while the LaserJet counterpart, can print in thousands.

A typical monochrome laser printer can print on average, 4000 pages per cartridge. An additional cost for the laser printer involves replacing the drum every 8000 pages (this depends on the extent of usage) on average.

With LaserJet technology having matured in terms of quality, price and compactness, it won't be long for us to see LaserJet printers replacing the inkjet printers at home.

For a home, small office user with a usage of 10 pages per day, an investment in a monochrome LaserJet printer (average cost of 250$ excluding advanced networking/duplexing options) would last a year with recurring costs of 50-100$ per year then onwards. This is a cool investment given the fact that you don't have to worry about inkjet cartridge replacements every so often.
