what are ide drives?

Ide drives

Many of us using their personal computers are taking benefits from these drives; they also listen to the word IDE several times in their offices or computer markets etc.

However! They often don’t know what the word means or which part of the computer it is?

The answer is very simple, our hard disk and cd-rom are both ide drives, and both of these drives are frequently used compared to others like Scanners and printers etc.

The first IDE device was introduced in the 1990’s and it quickly became the standard for computers.

It supports the ST-506 command set, and its limited controller functions build directly on the drive's logic board.

Most new mother boards come with built in IDE connections; therefore the chips are also designed with the board. Western digital and Compaq designed the 40-pin IDE ISA pin out specification.

These drives are officially known as ATA/CAM(attachment/common access method). The cable that is used for IDE is 40-pins which is plugged into the controller and into the drive.

IDE controllers use two drives as either master or slave. For the identification of the drive, the drive maker’s uses different methods, while the most common method is to use the Jumpers method.

The function served by these jumper settings tells our computer weather the drive is master or slave. For a primary hard drive, set it as master, and for a secondary hard drive set the jumper to slave.
