LaserJet questions - Direct Pdf printing

Direct PDF Printing

The idea of PDF printing is to present the PDF file directly to the print service provider (the printer). This means you don't have to use a converter to convert the document, which features all the richness of a PDF format. The problem with some of the conversions are that there are missed graphics, and huge file sizes in the traditional native formats like pcl5, pcl6,etc, which effects the network usage.

Adobe had been faced with the dilemma that the richness of the formats (Postscript/PDF) they pioneered couldn't print similar to how it should appear when created - because of the intermediate tools/processes involved in conversion to the printer description language. Adobe decided to streamline the whole process so that the rich features of the PDF go straight to the printer as intended.

PDF files offer so many distinct features:-

1) It contains a lot of features (page layout, graphics and fonts) that allow them to be displayed and printed as it is.

2) Compact because of the compression schemes employed.

3) Portable because of the device independence nature of the format.

Direct PDF printing, without having to select a print command from the application, increases the productivity and reduces workflow costs.

PDF printing benefits advertisements where changes can be made to the PDF at the last minute before it is sent to the printer. This wasn't the case with the postscript workflows because postscript is an interpreted stream.

A page may have text with a given font and the later pages can use the font specified in the previous page. A certain page may not print without the other page being printed.

PDF is a object based file where each object specifies by itself what it is. So, each graphic object can be modified without affecting the remaining contents in the document. This helps in last minute changes to the initial document in press scenarios where the market variations could happen at the last minute. PDF is a complete solution because it has the provision to embed fonts into it, eliminating the chances of missed fonts and missing support files with a RIP when the file is imaged. The RIP concept in the traditional postscript workflow, goes into the printer with direct PDF printing - where the printer can directly handle the PDF format, rasterize it and get the contents on paper.
