Bandwidth explanation

Bandwidth can have several meanings so I am going to split this section up.

Computer bandwidth

When we refer to bandwidth in computing we are talking about the capacity of the communications line connected to the computer to transmit/receive data.

Internet service providers

When your ISP sets the bandwidth, it means there is a set limit to your monthly download and upload quota of data. Some companies apply this, others don’t. Personally I use a company for fast Internet access, which does not cap my limit.

If you browse websites and check email then you wont need much bandwidth and this will not concern you. However, if you often download music applications and movies, then you need a high bandwidth limit so you can download a vast amount in a one-month period.

As you can see from the above, it depends on the kind of user you are to define how much bandwidth you will need.

Web hosting

When a web hosting company sets your bandwidth, it refers to how much traffic your website can receive in a given month. Some web hosts allow a large amount, while others limit this and have a different price scale for the greater your site will need.
