ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange
An encoding system that started being used in the early 1960’s. This system uses a 7-bit code to emulate characters with numbers ranging from 0 to 127.
ASCII extensions are also being used that represent international characters using 8 bit codes.
It is not really important to understand these types of codes to use computers nowadays, however if you have an understanding of the codes, you will have insight in to the backbone of the computer as we know it today.
