Soyo KT600 Dragon Socket A Barebone Kit review
As much as the Soyo KT600 Dragon Socket A Barebone Kit seems to be for gaming, I beg to differ. True, it can play some games but surely not the higher-end ones that the title of “gamer” goes with. This kit seems to be great for building a server with its Athlon Sempron 2600+ processor and 512 MB RAM.
The kit comes with:
Ultra Dragon ATX Mid-Tower Case with Clear Side
Soyo KT600 Dragon v2.0 Socket A ATX Motherboard
AMD Sempron 2600+ Socket A Processor
Ultra Socket A/370 Copper Core CPU Cooling Fan
Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Memory
This is a great deal for only $269.99 after mail-in rebate. The case is a wonderful case with a “door” on the side that easily comes off and has an acrylic window that allows great visibility on the side. It also has a “vented” front and perforated vent in the back allowing the installation of fans for great airflow.
The motherboard is not the best but it is not trash either. It fits in well with the kit, allowing you to use a range of different AMD processors with the Socket A architecture. This provides the ability to upgrade nicely, a key factor of any computer system or kit. With 1 AGP (4x and 8x), 5 PCI, and 1 CNR slot on the motherboard, your cards should find themselves right at home with room to spare.
The memory included is DDR400 speed, which is great. 512 MB RAM is nothing to be ashamed of and is a great base size. The motherboard has 2 slots for memory sticks, allowing you to put another 512 MB RAM into it easily.
The processor is not horrible but I would say it is sub par for the gaming scene. This is not a problem per say because the motherboard supports Socket A, which any Athlon XP or Duron could be put in its place, offering much higher speeds. You can check out my cpu install article for further information on upgrading easily.
For the money, this kit is worth its weight in gold. This kit provides a great start for a server, and with added memory this could very well provide an excellent server. Servers need more memory and hard drive space than processing power, which this kit offers. The kit is an excellent buy without a doubt.
