Mouse term explained

Mouse – Mouse (Pointing device)

The mouse is a device that interacts with the computer, resulting in movement from a cursor on the computer screen.

When you buy a mouse, make sure it is compatible with your computer and it fits in to the desired port. Simplified, make sure the thing works before you buy it.

There are different types of mice available. I will outline these below.

  • USB
  • Serial
  • Cordless
  • Optical
  • PS2
  • The USB mouse uses a USB wire to connect to the computers USB port. I have a few of these, however I have to use a ps2 converter, otherwise my mouse needs to be unplugged every time I boot up. I have an article within our printer repair section, explaining USB chipsets, and why these problems can occur.

The serial mouse uses a serial interface to connect to the computer.

The ps2 uses the ps2 port at the back of your computer, you will see a keyboard slot here also.

The cordless mouse is exactly as it suggests. I have had a few of these, and they can be really tedious if you spend a lot of time on your computer. You will end up using batteries by the dozen. I would say a definite no to this type of mouse in my opinion.

The optical mouse uses electronics to track the mousses movement. They require less maintenance over your normally ball mouse, and can work on many surfaces. I use this type of mouse, and can’t recommend them highly enough. Any computer buyer needs to have this as their mouse. You can even use this mouse on your lap, and it will still work fine.
