Kbps term explained

Kbps – Kilobits per second

This term used on my site refers to the measurement of data transfer by a modem. It can be used to describe data transfer between networked computers or computer peripherals.

The type of line the port is connected to restricts the speed.

This is why cable and ADSL modems use a different line, so they can make full use of the speed available.

The normal analogue phone line is only able to transfer data at around 56kbps, resulting in a data transfer of around 6kbps at a maximum.

This is different for digital lines and there is often no set limit to how fast the lien can go. Companies will cap the line for home users and make them pay more for extra bandwidth usage.
