Gigabyte GeForce FX6800 GT 256Mb review
Gigabyte GeForce FX6800 GT 256Mb
Out of the box, the first noticeable difference between this card and most cards, is the fact that the fan is on the correct side. Especially for case moders, there is a major disappointment when nice looking and often elaborate cooling designs are turned upside down when the card is installed.
If you have a clear panel on your case, you’ll be glad to show off this piece of graphics acceleration.
One thing to look for in any accelerator is proper cooling of the graphic chips. The problem is, the chips usually face downwards. If you put a lit up fan (like this has) on the underside, you can’t see it and that is a bit disappointing if you were planning on showing it off.
This is overcome by a heat sink on the underside, and two metal tubes which transfer heat to the heat sink and fan that are located on the top side. This is an effective design, however it does provide for some possible challenges.
The fan sits off of the board quite a bit, and it still has the heat sink on the underside. You could find yourself rubbing up against another card and that would constrict the air flow, which is bad. The board is a bit on the long side as well.
The fan is also a bit on the noisy side. This can be adjusted though by using the supplied software to slow it down. With it running a little slower, it wasn’t nearly as noisy.
I found this card on the net in the $600 range. It’s a shame the only bundled game was Doom3. That’s about the only interesting thing you’ll find, software wise.
