Defragmentation term explained

Defragmentation term explained

Defragmentation – Defragmentation (fragmentation)

Fragmentation – This is caused when the main operating system has to split a file in to smaller pieces from the original file. For example, when you download a file it might save the file but fragment the file to several sources.

The operating system keeps a record of where the split files are stored, as you can probably guess this can slow your system down and heavily effect performance.

This is where defragmentation comes in to play. The process is simple to explain, however it is a rather long and complicated task for the computer to perform. When you run a defrag on your computer system, the system scans the computer locates all of these split files and then rejoins the files together.

You should perform a defragmentation when you have a lot of files on your computer. I normally perform one around every 6 months. The process can take a while and computer hard drive speed plays an important role in regards to how long the process will take.
