Data can be described as information that is stored digitally. Data can be anything like word documents, games, images, music and so on. Data when referred to in computer terms is a file of some kind stored on a computer or digital device.

It is bits, which are stored in specified way mostly digitally.

When a CD says it can store 700Mb of data it simply means it can store 700Mb of information of any kind.
