Our guide to choosing your memory

Computer memory can be a crucial part of the buying computers experience. If you need extra education on memory, check our computer education section for detailed information.

The amount of memory you will need depends on your needs and use of the computer, however as a general rule, I recommend at least 512 DDR memory. This will be fine for the average user for the next few years. For more serious users, this will work well now also, however as I’m sure you know, this amount will need to be upgraded soon.

If you are a first time buyer, don’t stress about the memory, it can get confusing, so simply take the most you can get for your budget. Shop around for the best deals though, and don’t be manipulated in to buying anything you are unsure about.

To summarise choosing memory, get the most you can for your budget. Don’t worry about type or make, this will likely confuse you. When you have used your first computer, and you want to change computer or even upgrade, you may want to learn more about this. For now though, I would recommend not worrying about the memory. All computer memory will do the job well for the average user.
