CPU guide for popular and best suited computer processors
CPU guide
This article discusses popular CPUS for the desktop computer. You can decide what is best for you as with all my buying guides. The processor is advancing at rapid speeds; below I will outline popular processors suitable for different users.
Whether you want to upgrade your processor, or you are building a new computer, you will need to have a compatible motherboard for the various CPUS available. For information on this, check out my motherboard guide here.
I will discuss what I use currently, what I have used in the past, and what I plan to use in the future.
Pentium 3/ Celeron
These processors are now old technology, however for a budget computer system, they would be an ideal purchase. You can find some excellent deals on these processors online. They work with the socket 370 motherboard, which are also older technology. I recommend this kind of setup for a very low cost, but effective system.
Pentium 4
These are very popular processors at the current technology. They run at very fast speeds and offer excellence in terms of performance. Intel processors are built to last. I have an Intel 166 processor from well over 10 years ago, still running the way it was new. You can also get a Pentium 4 Celeron, which caters for those of you on a tighter budget. They are slower than the Pentium 4, however they are still a suitable option for many computer users. You will need a socket 478 motherboard for these types of processors.
AMD Duron/Athlon
I am currently using an Athlon XP 2800; they are excellent processors and have the best deals in the market. I have also got other systems with an Athlon XP 2000 and an AMD duron 1.3 GHz. Again, you can find excellent deals on these processors online. AMD Durons are the predecessors to the AMD athlon, and will cost less. The quality and speed is not as good as the Athlons however. I highly recommend these processors for budget and high end users.
AMD Athlon 64bit
These are the processors that bring you the new 64-bit technology. The processors mentioned above are only 32-bit. You will need a socket 939 motherboard to run these processors. There are other socket motherboards available that will run the above processors, however for this CPU guide I am outlining what I have used, and what is popular based on my experience.
That wraps up my buyers CPU guide, you should now be able to make a choice based on your situation and needs. Remember if you need to learn about motherboards, check out our computer education section, or visit this motherboard guide here.
