CODEC term explained

CODEC term explained

CODEC - Compressor / Decompressor

CODEC when talked about in computing is a piece of software, which is to compress and decompress data. I use them every day for audio and video purposes, and this is when you will most likely come across them.

Certain movie files require a certain codec to be installed before you can view the movie. For example to view a divx movie, you would need the divx codec, which you can download at the divx website.

I recently purchased a hardware divx player where I can watch div x movies via my television. My guess is that this DVD player has a built in codec that supports a wide range of formats.

I may review the DVD player and offer a guide on the procedure for watching divx movies in the future.
