CD ROM term explained

CD ROM - Compact Disc Read Only Memory

The CD ROM is similar to the audio CD. It works in more or less the same way, however it stores data instead of music. Your average data CD will store around 700Mb. Comparing this to a standard floppy disk, which holds 1.44Mb. You can see the data a single CD can hold is considerably larger.

The CD writer known in computer terms as a CD burner can store information on special CDs. These CDs are known as CD R and CD RW. With the correct software you can back up your data, store data, create music CDs, and even put moves on to these CDs in a special format. I am planning a basic guide for putting a film on a CD and playing it on a hardware Divx player in the coming months. This is very easy to do and every new user should benefit from being able to do this.

CD writers come in different speeds such as 42x 16x 50x. This simply means the writer will record at 42 speed, re record (go over a CD) at 16 speed and read at 50 speed which is widely the normal speed for reading CDs today.

CD R – this is a CD what will record data, music, and movie files and many other known formats. This type of CD can only record the information once.

CD RW – this type of CD Can record, and then be re recorded over the previous recorded information at a later date, much like the old blank VHS tapes.
