Abit Radeon X600 Pro review

I’ve covered high end and low end cards, so now is the time to take a look at some mid-range graphics cards. These cards will be adequate for most users and allow you the flexibility of great business graphics, with the ability to handle most games you may throw at it.

The first card we’ll look at is the Abit Radeon X600 Pro. If you read my other articles on what to look for in a graphics card, then you’ll notice right away that this card meets a lot of criteria. 256MB of DDR RAM, DVI, S-Video, and VGA outputs. It’s a fairly nice looking card as well.

The thing that caught my eye, besides a price of $149, was the company’s web site. The site is well laid out and offers a lot of helpful information. It’s very easy to get drivers and information on everything they manufacture. That in itself is a good reason to buy their product, but read on.

Looks and price don’t mean everything, how does the card perform? Well, it is a PCI-Express card, which usually says enough, but it’s a very low end PCI-Express card. This card only has 4 pipelines to carry pixel information on, as opposed to 16 in a high end card. If you intend to play Doom 3 at high resolution, the card will struggle a bit. Even over clocking it (a utility that comes with the card) doesn’t increase performance enough to help much. If you have older games or intend to play games at lower resolution, you’ll probably be fine. This card isn’t for the serious gamer though.
